The Journal of Capi Advor – Entry Three

Antomen 36, 1646

Today was a good day. Fidel arrived at Deeder’s Pass. He got filled in on the news and decided to join in leading the battle.

We spent the night catching up.

I continue to have pride in my elven friend. His heart is not into service for others. But his soul is righteous. Even after swearing off helping political advances, he still sees the course of actions that follow the goodly thread in the chaotic world before us.

But I worry for him. Salnan made it clear that this was a fight for souls. I don’t know how Fidel will react when he is forced to face her on the field. The professions he has told me tell me he has an undeniable love for that woman. But she will oppose him, because she has no choice to avoid it. What will happen that day?

I know I will be there. I will do everything I can to make sure he survives the ordeal. But in doing so, will I make an enemy of my best friend? I guess time will tell.

I don’t envy your position, Fidel. Not one bit.

Hate

The more you look at hate, the more you will hate. Try it in reverse sometime. Life gets a bit better.

The Journal of Methvas Aranongo – Entry Four

Antomen 12, 1646

The loss has been heavy on his heart but he has made great strides the past few days. I’m comfortable enough to leave him in his mother’s care. He has shown no desire to pursue the murderer and that concerns me greatly. One of Fidel’s strongest passions has been a desire for justice. He has lost it. I fear he is broken but I know my son. He will come back from this. He does not simply give up and step aside for evil to conquer the lands. I know he will snap out of it. I don’t want to be there on that day for, knowing him, everybody who gets in his path will be seen as an enemy. I have warned Snarthaw to watch for that day and keep everyone out of his way.

My latest report from Lord Ias is that the numbers on the battlefield have dwindled greatly on both sides. Each side looks exhausted. So Pravas and I have decided to round up all the wizards who have abandoned Lusetar’s cause to return to the field and execute the final blow that he has avoided. This war will end in two tendays and it won’t be under the leadership of Lusetar Timpes.

I’m on my way to the Woodlands now to deliver the message. While Bellpena will resist at first, I know she will lend us her magical fliers. If anything, we will leave with volunteers. The people of Aphoridite’s Woodlands have always had an affinity to righteousness, even if their leader has been most adverse to bloodshed.

The Journal of Methvas Aranongo – Entry Three

Fidel and Abby have found a home in Marides. A good place for them to settle down and raise a family of their own, should they choose that course. Fidel seemed unsure on what he wanted to do in regards to children. I’ll let the two of them work it out.

I had to leave them behind. While I may have defected the battle just under a month ago, my honor doesn’t allow me to abandon my kingdom. I received word from Lord Ias that Harlow’s Hovel has decided to withdrawal from the northern alliance. The people will need their Arch Mage so I have decided to return.

I’m a little worried for Fidel as he seemingly decided he wants nothing to do with the rest of the world. While that may be peaceful for awhile, I’m certain he will become bored and take up arms again. I wished him and Abby luck before I departed.

I will be meeting with Pravas soon to go over Lord Fineal’s plan for the future of Puldechra. The battle continues last I heard and losses are still higher on the Barams side. But I do not doubt that Lusetar Timpes has something up his sleeves.

All of us need to be ready for it.

I was wrong about my son. He was not able to set aside his hatred for his enemy to join sides and work against a common foe. For a day or so, I was proud that he could do so. But now I’m even prouder that he will not compromise his character. Fidel will be Fidel. And I can’t imagine a better child than he has turned out.

Even as an old man, I cannot believe I joined him in his defiance. I am not certain if Fidel’s influence on me is because he brings out the best in those around him, or if I just dislike Lusetar so much that Fidel’s defiance was an excuse for me. Fidel is right, Lusetar has an ulterior motive. Fidel said what I thought.

It’s been four nights since we defected. The battle has faded away. The crickets and birds have returned to our dreams at night. The solace of the road has truly reminded us that a road of isolation isn’t necessarily a road of loneliness. I see the happiness reflected in Fidel’s eyes as we eat by the fire. I see that very happiness reflected in my future daughter every time she glances his way.

What more could a father ask for than peace in their children’s hearts?

Writing Tip: Speed Matters

Here’s a Writing Tip: Do not use applications that slow your flow.

If the application can’t keep up with your typing, it’s going to hurt your writing by stuttering and slowing your thoughts. The best writing comes from how quickly you can capture that thought and get it into tangible form.

If you do find you really like the look and feel of an application, you may need to upgrade your computer to keep up with it.

The world of creative writing

Digging into the world of creative writing is like peeling back the outer layers of your soul. You start slowly, a little poke to form a small hole and see what happens. Some words flow out and take a small shape, like a green-eyed elf in a peaceful village, looking down from the top of a hill and witnessing a travesty occurring below.

Then you do a little nick in that armor. Your character is enraged and full of passion. He springs into action.

The nicks turn into cuts as they peel out the depth of your vision. Things become not as they appear. Trusts get formed, and some broken. Plots widen, conflicts erupt.

You find yourself shivering in the cold, naked, and your armor sprawled out before you in the form of thousands of words. But your heart remains warm because you did it. You finished.

Is it a masterpiece?
Does it matter?
You finished.

Beauty and the Beast – See it yet?

Have you ever watched previews for a movie and thought “OMG, that’s gonna be the best movie ever”?

Then you watch it and you’re so disappointed you curse the company and the actors that were involved in building your hopes up?

Well, that is NOT what #beautyandthebeast is like AT ALL!

Disney’s magic lives on!
The movie truly reflects the original throughout all of its live-action representation. Never could you imagine that a live-action adaptation of a 1990’s animated movie could possibly live up to the predecessor. But Beauty and the Beast does so in every little detail.

Sure, they add some small twists (think “snowball”), some more songs, and modified dialogues. But OMG was it all for the positive.
You get to learn what happened to Belle’s mother. You get to see the Beast’s heart transform from a cold and callous animal to a kind a caring man. You get to see Gaston represented in a truly wicked light, a super-handsome man with a killer’s heart. You even get more face time with the enchantress that started it all (just enough to realize she’s fair and never walked away from the situation).

There is not a single cast member in this movie who did not step up their game to play their role in magnificent glory.

And yes, I was very partial to Emma Watson playing Belle because she was seriously a shoe-in. She could not do any wrong in my eyes. And she did not fail to represent the individuality of a fearless and small-town girl wanting more out of life. Her message was very clear that she didn’t desire a man to save her, but she was certainly open to help save one herself.

Disney deserves the $100+ I will be spending today for this movie. Every single cent of it! Thank you for bringing my entry into adulthood back to the big screen in a way that is glorious and ever-lasting.

An Alive One

After a few moments, the assassin grew impatient. “Order your guards to attack or step aside,” he warned. “I’m a busy man and have things to attend to. The guild has made it clear to me they will work with anybody who sits upon that throne upon my departure.”

“What kind of a King would I be to allow an assassin to murder my kin?” the King hissed.

“An alive one,” the assassin retorted.

Ares’ Abomination in the works

My third installment in the Trials of Fidel Austempes is well on its way. I am planning to finish the rough draft around the end of June. I’m targeting this one to be three times longer than the last book and covering a much larger time span. So far, I am up to 24 characters developing and I don’t see an end in sight yet as the story unravels in my head.

The one thing I’m keeping in mind is that nobody likes a happy ending!

Hmm. That doesn’t sound right…or is it everybody likes a happy ending?

Oh well, I’ll figure that out eventually. Off to the keyboard!
